When a dog uncovers a strange antler in a restored bog, its owner begins a search that leads to an astonishing discovery: not one skeleton, but dozens – the ancient resting place of the Great Irish Elk.
But the bog holds more than relics. Among its finds are prehistoric objects – and the preserved body of a young woman, buried two thousand years ago. Named the Belroe Woman, her story begins to shape the lives of those who encounter her: the man who unearthed her, an archaeologist obsessed with her past, his daughter growing up in her shadow, and a scientist drawn back to the site decades later. »The Red Mouth – an béal rua« is a haunting, lyrical novel about memory, obsession and the pull of deep time – and about what we choose to uncover, and what we leave buried.
